Part of the Destiny project involves the use of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Many HEI and education technology companies worldwide develop courses for education and industry, the most successful being Couresa. Destiny partners in Spain recently conducted research into the production of MOOCs. The results are as follows:
Within the European Union, Spain is currently developing more MOOCs than any other member state, thus providing 27.3% of European MOOCs. However, these courses are primarily academic in nature and aimed at filling in gaps in the academic curricula, as a result there are very few MOOCs focused on providing the training and skills that are required in professional settings.
Despite the fact that Spain’s national GDP is over 15%, and that the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands’ GDP stand at 45% and 31% respectively, no specific tourism industry training is being offered via MOOCs.
